On December 11, 2024, Iranain singer Parastoo Ahmadi became famous worldwide from a concert she performed in front of no one. She called it the Caravansara Concert, an event that both polarized and unified the nation.
Parastoo performed this concert in a traditional Iranian venue with no audience but wore a long black dress with her hair visible. This non-conservative dress was a clear sign of rebellion against the regime and its policy toward women. The concert was filmed and posted on Youtube where it quickly rose to popularity. Within 24 hours, the video had almost 500,000 views and a clip had spread to Instagram with 2 million views.
It didn't take long for the Iranian government to find out. They quickly built a case against her claiming the concert was illegal and went against the restrictions imposed on women. These include that women may not sing solo or show body parts excluding the face and hands in public.
Arash Sobhani, an Iranian-American musician and activist, described her performance as "pure art" because of its social message. Iranians see Parastoo's concert as another act of defiance in the Woman, Life, Freedom feminist movement, and a reminder to the Iranian government that women will not give up fighting for their rights.
Parastoo was arrested and later released on $38,000 bail. You can view her concert here.
