I recently had the honor of compiling a glossary for Professor Nahid Siamdoust's newest book, Iran Amplified: One Hundred Years of Music and Society. This book is coedited by Siamdoust and H.E. Chehabi and is a collection of narratives and analyses by musicians and researchers studying the most recent century of Iranian culture through the lens of music. The book covers everything from the Constitutional Revolution in the early 1900s, to the Iran-Iraq war, to the most recent Woman, Life, Freedom protests while examining the impact music had in driving these changes.
Professor Siamdoust is a leading expert in Middle Eastern Studies with the focus on analyzing Iran through its music. She wrote the book Soundtrack to the Revolution which describes the history of music in Iran while explaining the unique power music has to unite individuals. Siamdoust, while also the editor, writes a few sections of this book, offering her insight into and hope for Iran.
Hessam Abedini is another individual featured in the book. Abedini is an Iranian-American fusion musician and music theory scholar. In his piece, he explores the fusion between Iranian and American music and his introduction to fusion through jazz.
The book is coming out in December. Be sure to purchase a copy on Amazon or Barnes and Noble!
