The U.S. government has issued a travel ban on twelve countries, including Iran. The other countries include, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. These countries were selected because they were determined to have insufficient screening capabilities and posed a risk to America, according to the White House. Additionally, the White House website states, "Iran is a state sponsor of terrorism" and that "The entry into the United States of nationals of Iran as immigrants and nonimmigrants is hereby suspended." This shows how this travel ban effects both Americans and Iranians equally with regard to travel between the two nations.

This is not the first travel ban on Iran in American history. In 2017, President Trump issued the first ban which was annulled during Biden's presidency. While the ban is not permanent it is also not temporary and has been instated indefinitely.

The ban will have significant impacts various groups of people. It will make it extremely difficult for Iranians to be reunited with family members in the states. Additionally, Iranian international students in America will face potential educational disruption or have be unable to continue their studies. The ban limits Iranians from entering the United States but as of right now, Iran has not issued a ban on Americans entering Iran. However, the State Department highly discourages Americans from traveling to Iran. They have classified the country as a Level 4: Do Not Travel location stating, "Do not travel to Iran due to the risk of terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, arbitrary arrest of U.S. citizens, and wrongful detention."

It is important to note that many of the countries on the ban list are primarily Muslim. The ban may result in an increase in religious discrimination against Muslims as they appear to be targeted by the new ruling.
